Official Finalists in the 2017 Hollywood Songwriting Contest

Happy to announce that I’ve been recognized for the first time as a Lyricist. Two of my new songs have been selected as finalists for the Hollywood Songwriting Contest (Lyrics Only category). Both songs are based on historical events, but are a little graphic and not the most conventionally formulaic 😉
Click on the links below to read either song.

The first song ‘Ohio, 1930’ is told from the perspective of a fictional character, but is based on an actual event which happened at the Ohio State Penitentiary on April 21, 1930; a prison fire which resulted in the death of 322 inmates. It was the deadliest prison fire in United States history.

The second song titled ‘Freedom Summer’ is based on actual events which happened in the state of Mississippi in the summer of 1964. It details the backlash of a volunteer campaign in the United States to attempt to register as many African-American voters as possible.

‘Melodic Twilight’ Receives Multiple Award Nominations

Thrilled to announce that my latest album ‘Melodic Twilight’ has just received 2 nominations for the 2013 Canadian Gospel Music Awards.

Instrumental Album Of The Year

Instrumental Song Of The Year, for the first track on the album ‘Acquainted by Morning’.

Full list of nominees are available here: http://www.gmacanada.ca/nominees/. Thanks to everyone for their support!

PUBLICATION

We are thrilled to announce that Cora Pettipas (co-owner of Melodic Twilight) has recently had her work published in World Scientific Publishing’s ‘Journal of Enterprising Culture’.

The goal of her case study is to contribute to a pragmatic knowledge of building a Canadian small business for an independent music artist who does not know where to start. It is meant to be an initial guide for musicians planning to consider this form of business development, as opposed to signing with a label, or as a way to increase the likelihood of becoming noticed by a label.

If this sounds like you, please follow the link below to view the .pdf file. Some of the areas addressed are: Product Development, Canadian Music Regulatory Environment, Distribution, and Promotion and Exposure.

Needless to say we are very excited about working with Paul on this upcoming album, which will be recorded at CBC Studios in Toronto and Shell Lane Studio in PEI this July. We are currently looking at a fall release date.

The 2011 Canadian Gospel Music Awards

A number of weeks ago I received an invitation from the CEO of GMA Canada asking if I would consider performing at the main gala for the 2011 Canadian Gospel Music Awards, which took place on October 28th in Calgary. I’m glad I accepted because as it turned out it was a pretty amazing night. I ended up doing 2 sets in between the award presentations and ‘Featured Artist’ performances. The first was a 15 min set for the door opening reception, and the second a 30 min set during the meal. My wife and I got to meet some great folks, and the shows production was incredible. Very surprised at how LOUD & ROCKIN’ the Gospel Music in Calgary was. I received very flattering compliments from the receiving members of ‘The Daniel Band’, who were awarded the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. And also from the show’s Producer, other artists, the sound crew, and the CEO/ Artist Program Coordinator. Lookin’ forward to next year!
